Battle for Subscribers Escalates with Streaming Devices
In case you've not noticed, the quest to acquire subscribers by the titans of the movie rental business, Netflix and Blockbuster is being waged in the arena of who can have the most streaming deals with digital player device makers.
Netflix stormed out of the gate way ahead of the competition, by teaming with devices such as the Roku, PS3, Xbox 360, and various television manufacturers. This inevitably set the stage for what has become the new frontier of digital movie streaming, and the competition is not about to lie low.
Not to be left behind, Blockbuster, despite its financial problems, has also secured arrangements with some device makers as well as tv brands. On the other hand, Amazon.com's video on demand is not that far behind, and could disrupt the pecking order.
While Netflix appears to have the advantage because of its jump on the competition, the recent deal between Blockbuster and Warner Bros to provide it with a 28 day headstart for new releases, could alter the landscape.
This has all the making of piting subscribers into one camp or the other, except that the ease of obtaining blu-ray discs, may well sway which way the traffic flows in the battle between Netflix v Blockbuster. This could ultimately determine which digital device players or makers' wins, and the last titan standing.
